BEOWULF [2007] review
December 1, 2007
I had only learned the day before seeing BEOWULF that it was actually a CG movie. I had seen the trailer before and had no idea that I wasn’t seeing flesh and blood actors. However, in the movie itself it’s instantly recognizable that one is in fact watching CG, which is a big negative for this film. The CG adds nothing other than very wooden looking characters who are very often unintentionally funny. As I have a penchant already for laughing at unintentionally funny things, I found myself laughing out loud while everyone else in the audience was silent (Japanese have a hard time picking up on this in an English movie).
The CG did work for the sweeping vistas and great shots of the village to Grendel’s lair. Gave a good sense of the distance and harshness of the land. Grendel himself look horrible, just too disgusting. Also, as I read in another review, it hardly seemed like a kingdom, so I didn’t really see what was at stake. Just move your tiny village to another place away from Grendel and his fell mother. It didn’t exactly look like a beautiful place to live in the first place.
CG is still not capable of producing an adult movie.
