CARS [2006] review

Like most people I’m a big fan of Pixar films, but CARS just didn’t seem to have enough of it to be a worthy addition to the Pixar Pantheon. The story was far, far too simple and seen a million times in other movies. Almost every character was completely annoying, from the main character of Lightning McQueen (if I never hear his catchphrase again, that will be just fine with me) to the ignant hick mandatory comic relief character of Mater, to Lightning’s main rival racing car. The characters that weren’t annoying were just boring.
The only good thing that came out of CARS was the sense of 1950s America nostalgia. It’s no secret the ’50s are my favorite decade and would be my first choice to live in if time travel existed (publicly). When the sleepy town is restored to it’s hey-day for one night, that’s the only time the movie shined for me, and that was brief.
I watched this movie in 720p and it was absolutely stunning. The CG animation, the way it reflected light, was beautiful. However, the movie feels like a very, very light snack, not the feeling one wants after watching a feature film, never mind a Pixar film.
