EAGLE EYE [2008] review

October 20, 2008

EAGLE EYE is the second pairing of actor Shia LaBeouf (FTW) and D.J. Caruso (fail).  The first was 2007’s entertainingly good DISTURBIA.  The best I can say about EAGLE EYE is that I’d never want to watch it again, but once is almost good action fun, almost.  Really, the movie should only be for LaBeouf fans, but there is no smoking hot female co-star this time like in TRANSFORMERS and the aforementioned Disturbia to make up for the ludicrous action scenes that dot this film.

TRANSFORMERS [2007] review

October 20, 2008

I don’t know who Shia LaBeouf’s agent is, but he must have a great one because he keeps getting paired with super hot female co-stars, way out of the league the characters he plays could normally get (see DISTURBIA review).  The trend continues in earnest in TRANSFORMERS, a travesty of a film that does almost no justice to my beloved toys of youth.  There is a catchphrase on AICN that goes like this, “Damn you Michael Bay!”  It is very deserved.

Daily Photo: Magic dancing stringless puppet

October 17, 2008

A crowd was gathering in front of the west exit of Shinjuku Station this Friday afternoon.  I already had my Nikon D80 out and ready in case something interesting came up, so I quickly snapped a few shots of a diminutive puppet dancing merrily, no strings attached!

BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU’RE DEAD [2007] review

October 17, 2008

Whenever I watch a movie I am catching up on, which means a movie not currently in theaters or even in its current year of release, I make a point to go into the movie only knowing what ever I remember from faint memories of its initial publicity or if it’s really old, from the movie’s reputation.  I have to stop doing that as in BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU’RE DEAD, I ended up watching another movie about people with absolutely miserable lives, which is the type of movie I can’t stand the most.

Summitting Akadake in Yatsugatake Nagano Japan

October 16, 2008

I have a new favorite prefecture in Japan.  It’s Nagano.  My favorite prefecture used to be Yamanashi, but the nature in Nagano feels deeper.  The forests feel older in Nagano, the air seems clearer, and the peace is more established.  The mountains are larger, and the sky spans wide over all—deep blue during the day, pink tinged at dusk, and deep black spotted with stars at night.  This is the setting in which Aya and I undertook a 9-hour hike up to the 2899m summit of Akadake.

Daily Photo: bike basket as trash can in Shinjuku

October 16, 2008

There is an interesting phenomena in Tokyo that if one person puts a piece of garbage somewhere, like in a bike basket, then everyone else feels it’s ok to put more.  There are virtually no public trash cans of any sort on the streets of Tokyo.  So the choice is either carry the garbage all the way home, or victimize some bike basket as in the photo above.

People of Meguro Station in Tokyo Japan

October 11, 2008

“Dude,” you might ask me, “what’s so damn interesting about Meguro station?”  And I’d answer, “Dude, not much at all.  I just happened to have to go there this afternoon.”  Thus, the not so interesting description of the below photo gallery goes.  But, there is one interesting note to add about the Japanese 5-O.

FTW spreads to Japan business signs?

October 10, 2008

The acronym FTW has been used increasingly in the past few years first among gamers and online geeks, but it has started to filter into more common every day spoken conversations as well.  For example, I hear John Noe of Pottercast using it sometimes.  So as I was walking down a small, off the path street in Kawagoe, Saitama, Japan, I noticed that a small business’ storefront sign had a “For the win!’ slogan.
