QUANTUM OF SOLACE [2008] review

I had bee waiting for quite some time to see QUANTUM OF SOLACE, but this was because I was hesitating to see it out of concerns of its quality. With so many known great movies out there still unseen by me, and I’m only able to see about 55 movies a year, I do not like to take risks on movies that may turn out to waste one of those 55 movie viewing experiences. Was QUANTUM a waste, I cannot say that unqualified since the spectacle on a small scale was ok, but I certainly was not impressed in even the slightest way. This movie is a shadow of CASINO ROYALE, which was not that spectacular either.
This movie is not as good as the Bond series because I have no emotional connection to any character. Therefore, the hyper-real, close combat fighting sequences are just elegant, razor blade cut scenes that keep me from total boredom.
Having not watched CASINO since it came out, I had no idea what was going on at first, and by the time maybe I started to catch on I did not care. I guess James Bond this time was supposed to be out of control? Umm, he did not act any different than in CASINO.
We know nothing of the bad guy, except he wants maybe money or something? Who knows. He was never menacing at all. He never showed any evilness.
The only things to keep the viewer awake were the action scenes, that were edited so hyperly it would hurt your mind to try and keep track of who is who and from what angle they are fighting. I had to just enjoy it in a random way, which is NOT how you should make the viewer feel.
There is no build up in the movie at all. The final battle was the weakest of the whole movie. I thought after that the movie would really start with the revelation of the true bad guy. Nope.

Absolutely agree. I actually really enjoyed Casino Royale, and was looking forward for some of the plot lines to be resolved in QoS. Instead, I felt I’d spent 90 minutes watching footage from a PlayStation game.
Coincidence that it’s a Sony Pictures movie….?
