INSOMNIA [2002] review

July 30, 2010

This movie certainly did not need to be made.  INSOMNIA is exactly the type of grim, useless movie I cannot stand seeing.  Why did I watch it?  First, I wanted to watch the lone remaining Christopher Nolan film I was yet to see.  Second, I read basically nothing about the movie so as to go in fresh.  It is certainly evident that this is the only film that Nolan did not also write.  Add to that that Al Pacino and Robin Williams are probably my two least favorite actors, and a completely monotone pace, and really this movie can be skipped as I do not view it as a true Nolan work.

FOLLOWING [1998] review

July 23, 2010

Last week I saw Christopher Nolan’s latest, INCEPTION, but I had never seen his debut, FOLLOWING, so I put it to the top of my Netflix queue.  I tried to avoid reading anything about the plot or story, and assumed that the plot would twist time, etc., which it did.  Like most non-Batman Nolan films, you would be hard pressed to describe it in a single sentence.

GORILLAS IN THE MIST [1988] review

July 18, 2010

Due to watching a lot of an Animal Planet show called Escape to Chimp Eden, I finally decided to watch GORILLAS IN THE MIST.  I now know I knew absolutely nothing of the Dian Fossey story, as I was quite shocked by all the events at the end of the movie.  I also did not know I was seeing real gorillas on screen as much as there were, and especially that Sigourney Weaver just went out and interacted even with the silverback right away.

INCEPTION [2010] review

July 17, 2010

I think Christopher Nolan with INCEPTION has cemented himself as director of the decade having kicked it off with MEMENTO.  Like he did with 2008’s THE DARK KNIGHT, he has made every other movie this summer seem like hack amateur derivative waste of film.  INCEPTION is the kind of movie that makes you leave the theater discussing, debating, and most of trying to figure out what in fact did I just see?  And do I understand any of it?

PREDATORS [2010] review

July 9, 2010

This will be my first movie review really tainted by low class people in the movie theater.  I have to get this out of the way first.  Some fool(s) brought their 3 year old daughter into the theater and let her run around!  Someone went to complain to management and she became only a minor distraction after that instead of a major one.  Then the person sitting two seats to my left was using his cell phone (bright screen) the entire first third of the movie.  I could not take it anymore and channeled Costanza and told him if he needs to do that, take it outside the theater!  That stopped him completely.  Needless to say, the movie going experience was ruined for me and I sat there disgusted the rest of the time.  PREDATORS I think was a pretty good movie, and I know I liked Adrien Brody’s badass mercenary character a lot.

PREDATOR [1987] review

July 4, 2010

I may not have ever of seen the full Rated R version of PREDATOR before as I never saw poor Carl Weathers with his arm blown off before!  I have strong memories of this movie, and of it being just a pure action movie free of gimmicks with an iconic alien hunter character and Arnold Schwarzenegger being his simple best.  Some 20+ years since its release, it holds up as good, and really better, than any modern sci-fi action adventure movie, if they even exist anymore.

SHERLOCK HOLMES [2009] review

July 1, 2010

It was not necessarily my entire choice to watch SHERLOCK HOLMES, but going into the movie expecting it to be pretty bad based on the trailers showing the brawn side rather than the brains side of Sherlock Holmes, I ended up being pleasantly surprised that the fisticuffs were not omnipresent and Holmes did display a good bit of his literary wit.
