Daily Photo: bike basket as trash can in Shinjuku

October 16, 2008 · Print This Article

There is an interesting phenomena in Tokyo that if one person puts a piece of garbage somewhere, like in a bike basket, then everyone else feels it’s ok to put more.  There are virtually no public trash cans of any sort on the streets of Tokyo.  So the choice is either carry the garbage all the way home, or victimize some bike basket as in the photo above.

The funny thing is, there are lots of recycling bins in front of the ubiquitous convenience stores in Tokyo (and sometimes general trash bins too).  So most of the bottles and cans in the above pictured basket could have been easily put into recycling!

I wonder what this person will do when she/he returns and finds their bicycle basket overflowing with garbage?  What would you do?

(actually the Japanese government made a video of what you should do about this!)

Bike basket used as a trash can in Shinjuku…

Trash cans are hard to come by in Tokyo, so sometimes an unlucky bike basket gets victimized and made into an impromptu trash can, if only one person is bold enough to start the transformation!…

Got something to say?
