Cosmos in bloom at Showa Kinen Park in Tachikawa, Japan

I had been to Showa Kinen Park in Tachikawa, Japan many times before last weekend, but only to play frisbee golf. So when I visited the park this past weekend to photograph cosmos hill, I quickly realized I have been missing out on the best parts of it. Aya and I rented bicycles at the entrance gate as Showa Kinen Park is huge, several kilometers long. This allowed us to visit more areas of the park than we would have had time to just walk to. Our first destination was cosmos hill, which I didn’t think I’d be impressed with at first.
I was wrong.
I thought cosmos are just flowers, but when you behold thousands of them over a large, sweeping hill that flows into a narrower bend and then on into some trees, you can’t help but appreciate their swaying in the wind beauty.

There were many people there, of course, but I wouldn’t call it crowded. I was able to easily take all the photos I wanted to without being bumped into or having to wait for a primo spot to point my lens. And I was certainly not alone in taking photographs of the cosmos. There were many photographers with serious kit. So for me, it was great to also do some camera watching!
The cosmos should be in bloom for awhile still, so if you can’t make it out of the Tokyo area to see the autumn foliage, then Showa Kinen Park may just be the next best thing.
