THE HANGOVER [2009] review

The Hangover, 2009

I only wish I had seen THE HANGOVER in a theater full of people because the ha’s! must have been resounding.  The movie pretty much lived up to my loft expectations after hearing the hype about it the whole summer.

The movie flies out of the gate and as the crazy things the group of four best friends did gets revealed, the laughs just build.  As they work their way out of most of the trouble they got in during the second act, there is a moment or two that drags a bit or falls a bit flat, but a vast majority of the jokes are hits.  The only thing I did not care for was the Mr. Chow character.  He was the only completely unfunny character on screen.

Loved seeing the vintage Mercedes.  I totally could not place one character, but knew she looked familiar.  Thankfully IMDB revealed her as none other than Heather Graham.

What kind of comedy is HANGOVER?  It is a rompous R-rated comedy that does not overuse the gross out humor that I cannot stand.  The comedy is largely situational and out of right field.  You want to see this absurdity though because as a viewer living vicariously through the characters, you want them to have as wild, as absurd, as expensive a time in Vegas as a group of guys on a bachelor party road trip in Vegas can have, without actually having to have the hangover yourself.

I enjoyed this movie, but not in a barrel of laughs kind of way. Couldn’t say for sure I laughed out loud at all, though I did enjoy following their antics. Am quite surprised you liked it, since the whole premise is about getting drunk and acting like louts, which I would have guessed you’d steer clear from.
