THE KILLER [1989] review

The reputation and the fame of THE KILLER is quite substantial, so thanks to Netflix browsing, I finally was able to see it for myself.  I cannot say it lived up to what i thought it would be because of its campy-ness and the absurdity of the action, but I did really like the characters.  The dialogue was also very funny and well delivered.  I liked the nicknames used too.

It was mentioned that “special bullets” were in the guns that Chow Yun Fat’s character used, but they must be really special for him to be able  to unload 5+ pistol shots into every person he kills and not run out in seconds.  I can live with some over shooting, but from the first time he fired I was like there is no way he would have any bullets left, let alone enough to kill scores more people with the same two pistols.  After that I just let it go so I could just enjoy the action.

I was expecting more martial arts in the movie too, but there was basically none, just all gun play.  The story moves fast, and the subtitles even faster, so it was a bit hard to follow all the plot exactly.  For instance, Fat is taking on one last assassination, I had no idea he even quit!

Obviously things go wrong on that last job and in his efforts to help people he has wronged, he piques the interest of a police inspector.  The friendship and loyalty was over the top between the characters, but still touching.

THE KILLER is very entertaining, over the top and if not to me deserving of legend status, at least I would watch another John Woo/Chow Yun Fat vehicle.
