I HEART HUCKABEES movie review

I HEART HUCKABEES was one of only about four movies I have ever thought about stopping watching within the first few minutes of it. Really from the opening words of this foolish movie I almost switched it off! I stuck with it, not really saying I watched it properly as I let myself be distracted by other things. The first act is brutal to get through. The end is a tiny bit funny. Unless you are in the mood for absolute absurdity, this movie should be avoided.
I have unknowingly watched three David O. Russell directed movies lately, and have had radically different reactions to them. As mentioned above, I HEART HUCKABEES is just nonsense, I have no idea in the world how Russell got such a famous cast to sign up for this amateur style facade of a film. The other two movies of his I saw recently were FLIRTING WITH DISASTER which I can see his style in now having seeing HUCKABEES, but the other one is SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, my second favorite movie of 2012 and one of the best movies I have seen in the past five years. Crazy.
The blurb for HUCKABEES is interesting, a pair of “existential detectives” help a man with his problems. That sounds like it could be farcical fun, and Lily Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman are great as the married detectives, but the fantasy scenes early in the movie kills it for me. Just seemed like all gimmick, nothing real enough to focus on while watching. It was all too absurd.
